The Peninsula Home Arts Homeschooling Center
The P.A.HS follows the S.E.A.R.C.H. motto of: a loosely organized group of families in the Tidewater, Virginia area who have homeschooling in common. We exist as a framework for networking, communicating and supporting each other. We are a very diverse group of people. We have homeschoolers of all shapes and sizes – from religious to nonreligious, unschoolers to curriculum based, and everything in between. We do not endorse any one resource, method, curriculum, philosophy or religion over another. There is no statement of faith to sign.
We often offer language classes as teachers become available. Please see our current schedule listed on
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pahscenter/ for the most up to date classes and times.
The art classes are divided into
two sections; one teaching awareness of drawing and drawing techniques, and the
other section exploring great masters from modern to contemporary art through
various materials and resources. The artist participate in "Process Art", which
focuses upon what the children are learning through the "process" of creating
their art. It allows artists to experiment and be creative. It also allows
students to make mistakes and learn from their mistakes.
Experts agree that the arts are a natural means for young children to play and learn. The benefits of early arts education are many: motivates children in learning, stimulates memory, facilitates understanding, enhances symbolic communication, strengthens problem-solving, develops imagination and critical thinking, builds self confidence and a sense of craftsmanship. The arts play a central role in cognitive, motor, language, and social-emotional development. Young children are very receptive to the arts!
Each art session, we will be different, and we encourage repeat students by
never having the same projects within a 18 month period. The students will
compile an art time line folder, and older students (9+) will be encouraged to
give a speech, or write a paper, on their favorite artist. If you would like to
preview some of the artists and projects for the coming semester, please view
the first two outlines on my class website:
http://members.cox.net/bergiemoore/ .
On occasion, there will be outside class work for art. It will be listed on the website as far in advance as possible, but sometimes we don't know we have homework until a task isn't completed in class. If you would like to see art work from previous classes check out our work on Artsonia.com, and add zip code look-up "23608". Artsonia is a great way to share your child's work with relatives and friends far away.
All supplies will be furnished for classes,
including a large newsprint sketch pad and drawing pencils. There is limit of
ten children per class.
REGISTERING: There is a five dollar holding fee per child, per class that will be applied to the class fees or materials when you attend, but is non-refundable. (Any non-refunded money will go towards special events catering.) If you wish to take classes please e-mail with your child's FULL NAME, the CLASS they wish to attend, and their AGE. I will pencil you in, but you will not be permanently on the roster until I receive the holding fee, which can be mailed by check or money order to Brandy Bergenstock, 305 Boyd circle, Newport News, 23608. The art classes are lead by
Brandy Bergenstock, an artist and homeschooling mother to two children. Brandy
strives to make projects that the average parent would not have the knowledge to
do (reverse casting) or projects that are just too messy to do at home (oil
paint lithographs). She holds her B.F.A from
Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of the Peninsula
