     Services for February 2012

    Theme: Abundance

     February 5th: “Radial Inheritance”

Many of us come to know our Unitarian Universalist history through the stories of such radical thinkers and activists as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Theodore Parker and Susan B Anthony.  In addition to being role models, the lives of these trailblazers can teach us much about the opportunities and challenges of our own lives and churches.

We welcome Aija Ruth Simpson, the Ministerial Intern at First Unitarian in Richmond.  She moved to Virginia from Berkeley having attended the Starr King School for the Ministry, where her studies concentrated on Islam and religiously motivated political movements.

February 12th: “Living the Welcoming Congregation”

A Welcoming Congregation is committed to being inclusive and expressive of the concerns of bisexual, lesbian, gay and transgender people at every level of congregational life, welcoming not only their presence but also the particularities of their lives.  The Fellowship was recognized as a Welcoming Congregation in 2008, but the work of committed inclusion continues!

Andrew shares the pulpit this morning with Lauren Furey, UUFP member and chair of the Welcoming Congregation Committee.  Special music will be provided by Nancy Orr!

    February 19th: “Our Improvisational Faith”

With no set creed or dogma, Unitarian Universalism calls us to a “free and responsible search for truth and meaning”.  One metaphor for that search may be found in the music of jazz: within a given structure we are free to improvise.  Improvisation requires courage and humility; it is energized by democracy and inclusivity; and it gives us permission to be occasionally dissonant!

Special music will be provided by the 504 Supreme!

    February 26th: “Making the Possible”

There’s a children’s book called Unitarian Universalism Is a Really Long Name.  We often say “UU” for short, but maybe it makes sense to have a really long name for this faith of big ideas, great hearts and willing hands, not to mention all of our lofty hopes and expansive dreams.  As we grow our beloved community together, how do we breathe life into those hopes and dreams?

Special music will be provided by the ChorUUs!
