This Sunday

January 22nd: “To Kiss the Ceiling” — High School Youth

Kurt Vonnegut’s short story, “Harrison Bergeron”, depicts a dystopian society, where “equality” has been reached, causing rampant apathy.  Join the high school teens as they discuss the values and repercussions of equality and diversity as they relate to our Unitarian Universalist principles and heritage.  How do we promote equal rights while championing individuality and fostering our own unique gifts?  How do we build equality by lifting people up instead of pushing them down?

The first (9:30am) service will conclude with a “polylogue” on the topic; the second (11am) service will include a Children’s Focus, with middle-schoolers staying with the older youth in the Sanctuary.  Special music will be provided (at both services) by the youth themselves!

Children's Focus

A little boy is teased for looking different than the other kids. His skin is darker, his hair curlier. He tells his mother he wishes he could be more like everyone else. And she helps him to see how beautiful he really, truly is. This story will help our children learn to accept themselves for who they are.

Next Sunday

January 29th: “The End of the World” — Rev. Jennifer Ryu

Revelation is the last book of the Christian Bible, also known as the New Testament.   Many people find this text disturbing or confusing.  We will try to unravel some of that confusion today.

We welcome Rev. Jennifer Ryu of the Williamsburg Unitarian Universalists in this pulpit-swap with Andrew.  Special music will be provided by the fabulous ChorUUs!

Each Sunday we share our gifts through our collection.

This Sunday we share with:

Empower Hampton Roads is a regional coalition of faith communities committed to working with all citizens of Hampton Roads to bring justice and unity throughout the Hampton Roads Virginia region.  Vision:  As people of Faith, united in our passion for social and economic justice, we celebrate our diversity in a spirit of unity. Respecting the dignity and worth of each person among us we offer a model of TRUE community to all of our cities. We dream of a time when the cycle of poverty and dependence no longer stifles hope and creativity. We dare to dream of a region where everyone has a voice and a place at the table where decisions are made and empowerment happens."

This week in kids' Religious Education

There will be no structured children's RE classes this week. All students, middle school age and up, are invited to stay in service and support our high school teens as they lead the morning services. There will not be a children's focus at the 9:30 service so any younger children who come at 9:30 are invited to play in the nursery and back RE area. At 11:00 there will be a children's focus called Chocolate Me. So younger children may come to service through children's focus and then head to the back RE room for group games. The nursery will be open for both services.

Important Notes

All RE teachers (children's and adult) are invited to our teacher appreciation celebration on January 21st at 6:00pm. Join for fun and fellowship as we dine on tapas and watch the film

heart Huckabee. Please RSVP to Joanne. Childcare available on request.

On January 29th after second service please join the Children's RE and Social Justice Committees for an informational potluck. Guests from the Commonwealth Catholic Charities will share a Powerpoint presentation and tell us about their work with refugee families. We will have a chance to ask questions and learn ways we might partner with them to help new families arriving in our community.

Check out the amazing winners!

February 1

"The Arc of the Universe Is Long"

facilitated by Rev. Andrew Millard

next session: Wednesday, January 18th

then February 1st, 15th, 29th

New time! 6:15pm to 7:45pm in the Office Building

It's not too late to join our discussion about race, identity, relationships, social change and faith!  We're reading portions of The Arc of the Universe Is Long: Unitarian Universalists, Anti-Racism and the Journey from Calgary and we're off to a great start already.  We invite you to join us, to learn more about our recent history, what it means for us today, and where our dream for a better world might take us!

POETRY & MORE

The next gathering - Feb. 1 will be at Jo Ann Cook's house 7 pm.  email for directions: msmaryeliz at verizon dot net

We encourage: sharing of original poetry or short stories/journal entries/essays,     sharing of pieces from a favorite poet/writer and selecting and reading from poetry books that will be available.

We also encourage: just listening if you like.  (Of course, if we get a whole room of just listeners, it'll turn into a meditation session :-)

Both the theme for the month and "assignments" we may give ourselves are  totally optional, sparks/prompts if you want to use them.

Having said that, the theme for February is "Shadow & Light" in honor of Groundhog Day, daylight hours growing longer, and the contrasts in weather Feb. often brings....The theme for March will be "Finding Balance" (Equinox)

In January we decided a "Word Share" might be fun.  So the (totally optional) "assignment" is:

Make a list of some (20 or so) of your favorite words, the most beautiful/sensual or poetic you can think of.  (This author offers these as examples of some of her favorites:  obsidian, wisp, hollow, trickle, iridescent and flicker.)  Feel free to flip through a dictionary for ideas.  We'll write them on small cards and anyone who wants may choose a word or a few words to take with them.  They may or may not inspire your next poem or story.

Hope to see you there - if not this time, another. Mary-Elizabeth

Continuing Adult RE Course

By Dr. Raymon McAdaragh

New Time! Continuing on February 1st, 15th, March 7th and 21st from 7:45PM-9:15PM in the main RE room of the Sanctuary building.

Registration: The cost of the course is $10 which includes a copy of Ray’s book on Developmental Harmonization. Please see Joanne to sign up.

Dr. Raymon McAdaragh is an Aerospace Research Psychologist currently employed with NASA under contract, conducting Human-System Integration research for Unmanned Aircraft Systems.

Developmental Harmonization: Course Description

This course describes a process that a group or an individual may follow to achieve a state of Psychic Harmonization (a state of physical, psychological and spiritual harmony). In this state, an individual may discover his or her intended path and purpose in life. Practicing the exercises associated with the Developmental Harmonization process also provides the many health-related benefits associated with meditation and physical exercise. This is something virtually missing in other books on meditation. The techniques are presented in an easily-understandable, practical application that may be practiced by anyone interested in the harmonization of our human condition. During the course, participants will cover the development of the ten objectives of the Developmental Harmonization process, and learn meditative exercises to address each objective.
