This Sunday

January 8th: “Revelation Is Not Sealed” — Rev. Andrew Clive Millard

Unitarian Universalism draws from many sources, striving to be open to new wisdom and knowledge that may deepen our understanding and expand our vision.  James Luther Adams declared this principle — that revelation is continuous and meaning not finally captured — as the first “smooth stone” of liberal religion, a defense against attacks by both orthodoxy and fascism.

Children's Focus

During Children's focus this week we will hear a modern version of the old testament story of David and Goliath. When a small boy named David is chosen to fight a giant named Goliath he must choose his weapons carefully and put his trust in God. How do we as UU's face the giants in our lives?

Next Sunday

January 15th: “To question is an answer ... but answers are nice, too!”

— Rev. Andrew Clive Millard

One of our hymns reminds us that, in our search for elusive answers, even to question is an answer.  In religion, in science and in life it’s important to ask good questions, but sometimes it’s nice to have answers!  So send Andrew your questions — by e-mail, on Facebook, by telephone, in person, via pony express — and he’ll endeavor to provide answers!  (Your mileage may vary.) Special music will be provided by Tret Fure!

This week in kids' Religious Education

At 9:30

In Love Surrounds Us we will continue our discussion of rituals. Joanne and students will create a group flower poem, use clay to form altar sculptures and make a ritual collage from magazines.

Home Activity: Talk with your family about family rituals. How could rituals be helpful in your everyday life at home? Can you suggest a new ritual for your family?

At 11:00

Astronomer Maria Mitchell is the focus of this week’s Spirit Play story with Marcy and Jeannine. In Maria’s Comet young Maria goes to the roof with her father to “sweep the sky” with his telescope. There, Maria discovers a whole new world that will capture her interest for the rest of her life.

Home Activity: On a clear, dark night take a walk outside with your family to view the stars. Is the moon out? How many stars do you see? Can you find the Big Dipper?

In our Love Will Guide Us class with Helene, children will explore gender stereotypes and emotions. They will hear the story The Strong Man Who Cried, play a game of Dress Up and Emotion Charades.

Home Activity: Think about how your family divides up chores. Are there any gender stereotypes? For example- Do the boys always take out the trash? Do the girls always do the dishes? Try switching chores this week and talk about how this makes you feel.

Our Riddle and Mystery class will discuss fairness with Brandy today. They will learn about how UU’s help others attain justice and explore their own ideas through the Big Question and the WCUU Broadcast.

Home Activity: Play a game of Monopoly (or other game with elements of chance and luck) with your family. Talk about the fairness of –cards such as go straight to jail, lose a turn, pay luxury tax, etc.

Our OWL students are invited to attend the service today. As part of the service there will be a special recognition of teachers and students who participated in Our Whole Lives.

Home Activity: Coming of Age will start soon. Please begin thinking about who you would like to have as your mentor.

The teen class is taking a short break from their Thinking the Web class so that they can prepare for their services on January 22nd. Please bring ideas for music, readings and the homily to class. Students are asked to remain after service to meet with Rev. Andrew and Jim Sanderson to work on the order of service. A light lunch will be served.

Home Activity: Please practice your music and speaking parts for the service.
