A Letter from our Minister

July 1 2007 through Jun 30, 2008

“Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it.

Boldness has genius, power and magic in it.”

What a privilege and pleasure it has been to walk with this Fellowship on its path from “Small” to “Mid-Sized” and from dreaming to doing! I offer the following observations for your consideration, in the hope that you will see yourselves as the strong and healthy congregation you are and wish to be:

This is a warm and welcoming place to come to, and that will only be enhanced by your declaration that the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of the Peninsula is an officially-designated Welcoming Congregation, ensuring that this is a safe place for all people and especially ensuring that it is safe for gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender people. You had just begun that process when I arrived in the spring of 2005 for my candidating week. May your welcome always be as wide as all humankind, characterized by loving kindness and the quiet courage it takes to live true to your principles.

You’re about to decide the way in which to enlarge the space you own in order to make this Fellowship available to more people. When I arrived in 2005, you had voted to move in order to provide the additional space the Fellowship needs. Now it appears that moving is one of several options. Whatever you decide, it’s clear that you’re committed to offering a liberal religious community to all who seek one.

You’ve made a commitment to full-time professional ministry. This began in 1999 and has not flagged. An interim minister will see you through the coming year and next year you’ll call a new minister. There are many highly qualified, smart, compassionate, deeply committed UU ministers and I know one of them will come to serve you here in Newport News. All the things you are doing will attract the best of them.

Many of you have made the decision to be generous with your faith. An increase in membership along with a deepened commitment to the future of this congregation bode well. Your pledging has increased in each of the three years I’ve been here, and I know those of you who haven’t yet been able to give at the Fair Share level give what you can. I encourage you to put your money where your faith is, so that there can continue to be a vibrant center for Unitarian Universalism on the Peninsula.

I am sad to leave you. Our work together has been gratifying. I hold you in my heart as I go. You can’t know the depth of the gifts you have given me; you made me a better minister and a better person, and I am thankful for the years we have had together. May all your dreams come true!

With Great Affection, Buffy
