Frequently Asked Questions

When are your services?
Every Sunday at 9:30 and 11:15 a.m. Music for quiet contemplation begins ten minutes before each service.
How do I get there?
Our sanctuary is at 415 Youngs Mill Lane, Newport News, VA 23602.
From I-64, take Exit 255 A (Jefferson Avenue heading southeast).  At the fourth light, take a right onto Oyster Point Road.  At the fourth light, take a right onto Warwick Boulevard (heading northwest).  At the first light, take a right onto Youngs Mill Lane.  We are immediately on the left.
Where do I park?
There are four handicapped parking spots located to the left side of the sanctuary building. There is one reserved spot located across from the main entrance for our annual service auction winner -- otherwise you are welcome to park anywhere in the lot or along the road. Please be courteous of our neighbors, and do not block any driveways or fire hydrants.
Is the church Wheelchair accessible?
Yes, we are!
What is Available for those with Hearing Impairments?
Our sanctuary is equipped with a loop system for hearing aid users. Turn on the "T Coil" in your instrument, and sit in the center section towards the front for the best reception.
Is childcare available?
The nursery (ages 0-3) is open from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. during Sunday Services.  Your children are also welcome to attend the religious education classes going on at the same time as services.  For other events throughout the week, childcare is available upon request.
May I bring my child into Sunday Service?
Of course!  Children are welcome in our sanctuary.
Will I feel pressure to join or "be saved"?
As a rule, Unitarian Universalists don't want you to feel pressured into anything!  On the other hand, we do want you to feel welcome and wanted.  So don't be surprised if people are curious, and ask about your spiritual journey.  Our curiosity about you is because we're interested, and not because we want to judge you or get you to accept our ways.  Sometimes you might feel you just want to sit quietly in the sanctuary, and we of course invite you to do that as well.
What makes Unitarian Universalism different?
The short answer is that we are "covenant based" rather than "creed based." That is to say we make promises to each other, and to the world, about how we will behave and what we will do. We like to learn from the beliefs and the spiritual journeys of our members and other people and don't require anyone to subscribe to a fixed theology or creed.
Is the Congregation LGBTQ Friendly?
Indeed.  We have gone through a training process with the Unitarian Universalist Association to become a "Welcoming Congregation," which means "striving for radical inclusion, and creating spaces that honor every part of our identities, backgrounds, and experiences."   We hope that you will find a home here with us too.
What should I wear?
Most people will dress in "casual" to "business casual" attire. Many are comfortable in shorts or jeans and a t-shirt; others prefer their "Sunday best." What's important is that attire concerns not keep anyone from visiting the Fellowship, seeking community and/or pursuing one's spiritual journey.
